personality

Charming, polite, and resourceful, Shizuru is the epitome of a competent student council president. There's a reason why she won the vote by a landslide, after all! Her charisma and grace have made her popular enough at Fuuka Academy that she has even netted herself a small fanclub of female students who have been seen eagerly trailing after her. Because of her dedication to the position, Shizuru is well-liked and well-respected-- even her 'rival' on the student council will begrudgingly admit that Shizuru's one positive attribute is her commitment to her duties as president.

Shizuru, of course, is a rather layered young woman. Beneath the composed image that she maintains to the majority of those who know her, there's a playful and almost devious streak that shows itself to the few considered to be close friends, or those who work alongside her on the student council. She's skilled at finding ways to pass off the more tedious tasks onto her subordinates, usually through veiled sweet-talking and praise that slips through mostly undetected until it's too late. Shizuru is certainly no stranger to teasing, either-- especially if it can earn her a flustered reaction from her good friend, Natsuki, who tends to chalk it up to the president simply being her overly-friendly self.

Shizuru is more than fine with this, or at least, that is what she wills herself so strongly to believe. At her deepest layer is someone who bears such a heavy shame for who she really is-- a sinful person who harbors untoward feelings for her friend. Her self-perception is such that she firmly believes that her 'wicked love' can never be requited, and Shizuru is more than willing to smother her real self for the sake of keeping that friendship untainted. Or, rather, she'll do her very best until the dam breaks and whatever control she tries to fiercely, desperately, cling to is ripped away. When pushed to her limits and faced with the prospect of losing her beloved forever, Shizuru becomes someone frighteningly resolute, who will forsake everything and everyone to protect the person most important to her.

Because I really wanted to include this somewhere-- I'm kind of obsessed with Shizuru's character song, and the quotes on here and the navi page are taken from this brilliant translation. There are so many interesting tidbits in the lyrics, especially the poems that she references with regards to her (perceived) futile, unrequited love. Honestly, I find the song beautifully heart-wrenching and poetically raw, and the translator's commentary really hits the nail on the head with regards to her character and motivation. Definitely more than worth the mention, here :)
